The Workings of the Miracle Organ – The Heart

heart

The heart is the most important organ of our body. Our heart is the size of our fist. It’s amusing that such a small organ can pump blood to our whole body. But how does our heart work?

Workings of our heart

The heart is located slightly left of center in the chest. It is divided into two parts: the left and the right side.

The division protects oxygen-rich blood from mixing with the oxygen-poor blood. The heart and blood vessels together make the cardiovascular system. It circulates blood and oxygen around the body. In fact, your blood pumps 5 quarts of blood every minute.

The heart beats about one hundred thousand times a day and, thirty-five million times a year. The oxygen-poor blood which is also the poor blood returns to the heart after circulating through your body.

The right side of your heart is composed of the right atrium and the right ventricle – which collects and pumps the blood through the pulmonary artery. The lungs refresh the blood with the new supply of oxygen making it turn into the color red.

Oxygen-rich blood which is the red blood then enters the left side of the heart which is divided into the left atrium and left ventricle and it is pumped through the aorta. The aorta takes the blood to the rest of the body. The valves in your heart keep your blood moving in the right path. Namely:

1) The Tricuspid valve

2) Mitral valve

3) Pulmonary valve

4) Aortic valve

They work like gates on a fence. They open and close whenever needed. Every valve opens and closes one time for every beat of your heart or about one time each second. Usually, the heart contracts and relaxes. Contraction is called systole. Relaxing is called diastole.

During the systole phase your ventricles contract. During this process, it forces the blood into the vessels going to your lungs and body much like ketchup being forced out of the squeeze bottle. The right ventricle contracts a small little bit before the contraction happens in the left ventricle.

Later your ventricles relax during diastole and are filled with blood coming from the upper chamber, the left, and right atrium. Then, the cycle starts all over again.

Your heart is being nourished by blood to blood vessels called the coronary arteries extending over the surface of your heart and branching into smaller capillaries. Science says that the heart also has electrical wiring which keeps it beating.

Electrical impulses begin high in the right atrium and travel through the specialized paths to the ventricles delivering the signal to the pump. This process helps in keeping your heart beating in a co-ordinated and in a normal rhythm, which in turn keeps the blood circulating; the continuous interchange of red blood with blue blood is what keeps you alive.

How do you know if you’re having a heart attack?

It is very important to understand the difference between chest pain and heart attack. Angina is a condition when the arteries of the heart are narrowed down, but not completely closed off. This is chest pain and very different from a heart attack.

A heart attack is when the arteries of the heart suddenly close off. The sudden closure of the arteries of the heart is called a heart attack. This causes a sensation of chest pain. This pain can be explained as tightness around the heart.
